Support the David Library of the American Revolution

The David Library of the American Revolution is a not for profit organization organized under the laws of the State of Pennsylvania.  DLAR encourages the solicitation and acceptance of gifts that will help DLAR to further and fulfill its mission to promote the study of history in the era of the American Revolution through the dissemination of the the information held in its collections by making materials accessible to scholars and researchers, and by presenting educational programs to students, teachers and the general public.
To that end, the David Library relies on the generosity of donors to advance its commitment to life-long learning and the preservation of our American heritage.  Contributions allow us to award fellowships, maintain our collections and provide educational programs free to the general public.  There are many ways that you can support these efforts.
Gifts in any amount are welcome and appreciated.  A secure online donation can be made by clicking the “Donate” button below, or you can mail a check made out to “David Library” to DLAR, P. O. Box 748, Washington Crossing, PA 18977.

Gifts of $300 or more entitle the donor to membership in the Friends of the David Library, our special donor recognition club. For more information about the members and benefits of the Friends of the David Library, click here.

DLAR is a non-profit educational institution registered as a charitable organization with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Department of State’s Bureau of Charitable Organizations under the Solicitation of Fund for Charitable Purposes Act, and is authorized to solicit contributions under the conditions and limitations set forth under the Act.  Contributions to the David Library are tax deductible in accordance with current Federal and State laws.

DLAR’s policies on gift acceptance are highlighted below.  For further information, please contact Meg McSweeney, Chief Operating Officer via (215)493-6776 ext. 106

Unrestricted Gifts:  Any contributions made to the DLAR shall be allocated to the unrestricted general account unless otherwise restricted by the donor or determined by the Board of Trustees. Cash gifts are acceptable in any form.  Gifts made by check are to be made out to the David Library of the American Revolution.

Restricted Gifts: Acceptance of a restricted gift imposes a legal obligation to comply with the terms established by the donor.  Therefore, it is necessary that the nature and extent of this obligation be clearly understood.  For this reason the terms of each restricted gift will be reviewed with the utmost care to ensure that they do not hamper the usefulness and desirability of the gift to DLAR.  Prospective donors with a restricted gift in mind should contact the David Library to initiate conversations about the suitability of the gift and the proposed restrictions.

Named Gifts:  Named funds can be established only for those gifts in excess of $5,000 and only after consideration and acceptance by the Board of Trustees.

Gifts-in-Kind (Non-cash Gifts):  Gifts-in-kind (objects, equipment, services, securities, real estate, etc.) will be reviewed with special care to ensure that acceptance will not involve financial commitments in excess of budgeted items or other obligations disproportionate to the usefulness of the gift.  Consideration will be given to the cost of maintenance, cataloging, delivery, insurance, display, and any space requirements for exhibition or storage. DLAR is under no obligation to accept Non-cash gifts that DLAR does not want.  DLAR will follow all IRS requirements in connection with disposing of gifts of tangible personal property, filing of appropriate tax reporting forms, and acknowledgement of such gifts.  When gifts-in-kind are given to DLAR with the intent of the donor receiving a tax deduction, it shall be the responsibility of the donor, not the DLAR, to obtain an appraisal of the gift for tax purposes. (Likewise, when a donor of professional services seeks a tax deduction, it shall be the responsibility of the donor to put a price on those services.) All gifts-in-kind accepted by DLAR will be inventoried and will become property of DLAR.  DLAR will have the right to sell an object, or to “re-gift” an item to another non-profit organization (e. g. a donated book already in DLAR’s collections may be given to another library).  Acceptance of a gift of property (other than cash or listed securities traded over-the-counter) may be subject to approval by the Board of Trustees.

Gifts of Real Estate:  Gifts of real estate may include developed property, undeveloped property, or gifts subject to a prior life interest.  Prior to acceptance of real estate, DLAR shall require an initial environmental review of the property to ensure that the property has no environmental damage.  In the event that the initial inspection reveals a potential problem, DLAR shall retain a qualified inspection firm to conduct an environmental audit.  The cost of the environmental audit shall be an expense of the donor.  Title insurance shall be obtained by DLAR prior to the acceptance of the real property gift.  The cost of this insurance shall be an expense of the donor.  Acceptance of real property as a gift to DLAR is subject to approval of the Board of Trustees following thorough due diligence.  DLAR reserves the right to sell any real estate that it has acquired from a donor.  DLAR is required by law to notify IRS of the resale price if the property is sold within two years.

Gifts of Securities: DLAR will accept gifts of readily marketable securities.  However, gifts of bonds, which require a “holding” period, will be accepted and cashed when the hold period is expired.

Bequests:   Any will or estate planning document which provide funds or other assets for the use of DLAR shall make such bequest in the name of the “David Library of the American Revolution, Inc.” All gifts received for restricted endowment purposes, when accepted, will be accepted only on the condition that, should the purpose for which the funds are provided cease to exist, DLAR’s Board shall allocate the income from those funds to purposes as near as possible to the original intent of the donor. DLAR shall not serve as Trustee or in any other fiduciary capacity under any form of bequests.

Planned Giving: The negotiation and execution of plans for Planned Giving shall be subject to the supervision and approval of the Board of Trustees of the David Library.  Planned Gift agreements will be created or reviewed by legal counsel.  DLAR will comply with the “Model Standard for Practice for the Charitable Gift Planner” promulgated by the National Committee on Planned Giving, found here.

Charitable Lead Trusts:  The DLAR may accept a designation as income beneficiary of a charitable lead trust.  The Board of Trustees will not accept an appointment as Trustee of a charitable lead trust.
Life Insurance:  Donors are welcome to designate the David Library of the American Revolution, Inc. as a beneficiary of a life insurance policy.

Acknowledgement:  All gifts to the David Library of the American Revolution will be recorded and acknowledged, and a complete record of every individual donor’s contributions will be maintained.  Once a gift is accepted, written acknowledgement of the gift that is in compliance with Internal Revenue code will be mailed to the donor as soon as possible.

Confidentiality:  Personal information provided to DLAR by donors will be regarded as confidential.  Donors will be publicly acknowledged from time to time in David Library publications such as newsletters and its website unless a donor specifically requests to remain anonymous.

General Disclaimer:  It is not the province of DLAR, its staff or Board of Trustees to give legal, accounting, tax or other advice regarding any kind of gift to the David Library.  Prospective donors are encouraged to seek the advice of independent counsel on matters related to the tax implications of a gift, or on matters related to estate planning.   Gifts to the David Library of the American Revolution may only be accepted on DLAR’s behalf by Trustees and authorized staff of the David Library.  The Board of Trustees of the David Library of the American Revolution may refuse a gift for any reason and is not required to state that reason to the party offering the gift.
